"Stolen" notebooks

Hmmmmmmm. I was sitting here (yes, at the office again) and I was trying to think of a way to start today's rambling, and all I could think of was...

A student of mine was really pissed off this afternoon. He was his normal, sunny self this morning, and I have never had any problems with this guy. He makes me smile. Some days, I have actually found him to be the calm in the storm. Suddenly, I guess he made a phone call for his guardian to pick him up, and he left.

Questioning some of the girls he talks to (if you are trying to make a mental connection, they would be the self-mutilators), and it turns out he and his girl broke up. That is kind of interesting, since this girl and him have stuck through thick and thin. Her parents went as far as moving her to a different community. At some point, she was pregnant with his kid. Don't know what happened with that...

Anyway, I guess she has been spreading lies about him. *sighs* He's such a sweet guy... at any rate, so he left.

Now, this sounds funny, but when I started here, I learned how to become a garbage picker. *chuckles* My support worker taught me to, literally, pick through the garbage at the end of the day for notes written by students. You find out what is going on, when is the next drug deal, and so on from these notes. Not horrid on the ethical scale, since if people were really cautious, they would rip up the notes (some do). So, my worker hands me a couple of books of this guy's poetry and rap writings.

I've read this guy's stuff before. Very eloquent and pain ridden. The stuff I was reading got deeper into his head than the stuff he showed me, and I was surprised that my support worker got this. So, out of shock, I asked "He gave you this?"

"Oh, god no. They were under his desk."

Now, I understood the garbage picking thing - really, we need to arm ourselves with as much "insider info" as possible. Where can a person draw the line without feeling like they are invading someone's privacy? I pointed out to consider not taking all of his stuff literally, since it could be more venting and ranting (such as wanting to kill people and himself) than what he is actually considering. Yeah, sure didn't address what this guy's rights may be. *frowns*

Sometimes, it is hard being here. I'm not talking about all the marking, the work, the school politics bullshit (which, trust me, is overflowing right at this moment)... it's hard seeing so many people hurting day in and day out. Some, I try to lighten their day. Some, I see the way I used to be in them, and it's almost scary. Some, I have no idea what the hell is going on and why they are the way they are.

What can one person do? I try to educate them and have discussions about drugs, sex, and healthy relationships. I tell them that it's okay to have a bad day; and to leave if they have crap to deal with. I talk to them and tell them it's their choice to use drugs, and suggesting trying to use less next time and don't show up to class stoned. We work on getting mental health in when life becomes too tough, or Child and Family Services when people in their life is making it too tough. I want to tell them that things will get better for them....

... but then I stop... because, really, will it?

And, totally off-topic and just because I haven't made any this year...
