One of my students may be dead.

I got a phone call at 2:45 p.m. this afternoon from a friend of one of my students. He told me her trailer burnt down, and no one knows where she is. Her Dad and the cops are presently looking around for her. She may have been sleeping when it happened. No one knows if she was inside. Has she come to visit school at all today? I tell him to phone if he hears anything.

I phoned another classmate who is her good friend. He talked to her last night when she was at home. Nothing since.

Her phone is busy. I don't know if that means "talking on the phone" busy or "absolutely destroyed" busy.

At 3:45 p.m., I finally got out of the office and drove by her place. There is RCMP and that annoying yellow tape. All that is left is a shell of aluminum and tin. The windows are shattered and the inside looks like burnt matches.

She was supposed to be waitressing at 4 p.m. I stopped by the restaurant. They had phoned in someone to cover her shift. No one knows where she is. We exchanged numbers in case anyone hears anything.

I phoned the coordinator of the program and my support worker to let them know what was going on. I now sit here, mentally compiling a list of classmates that were close to her and may need mental support....

Waiting. Just waiting.
