1. Being on a permanent contract (I know that seems like common sense, but I'm not even at this stage yet)
2. Working for the district for one year and one day.
And, yes, in the past, that one day has made a difference. Anywho, moving on...
The Union and the School Board are at war. No, Joe Public does not realise what is going on. He might feel a slight tremor, but then pass it off as flatulence. And no, for those who were not aware, it is illegal for teachers to strike in this province. So, unless there is "demonstrations" organized or leaked information (which is unethical and highly illegal), Joe Public wouldn't care either.... until possibly next year....
Can you imagine a school year that had no sports teams? No after school help? No Christmas/Winter concerts? No school trips? No Proms, Safe Grads, or school dances? You might think of it as impossible, but it could be a reality. Who would you blame for that?

If extra-curricular programs did not exist, who would you blame? (Feel free to answer honestly)
Teachers, since it is their job to provide these things to students
1(20.0%)
Parents, since it's their support that makes these programs worthwhile
0(0.0%)
Students, since they are the participators
0(0.0%)
School Board, since they govern everything school oriented

but on a side note, I'm a strong supporter of unionized workers and will stand beside you during your time of crisis. Billy Bragg said it best when he said "there is power in the union" did I mention presents for weddings?
Hope you are ok.

Working to Contract is a last resort kinda thing. At least you guys have a current contract (I think I'm correct in saying that).
One thing I am already sick of hearing (and I'm only part way through my first year of teaching) is the "but you guys get the summers off". WE DON"T GET PAID FOR THE SUMMER, OR CHRISTMAS OR SPRING BREAK! No vacation pay, no banked holidays...nothing. The amount of prep/extra curricular time far outweighs the 1 1/2 months of summer vacation.
There was an interesting article in the MTS newsletter a few weeks ago comparing teacher salaries to other jobs. Although it was cool for me to read, I really think Joe Public needs to read it too.
I'm miffed.

I suppose one could rationale that el presidente now sees the other side of the coin, so to speak.
You really should phone me and let me know the story. I love teacher gossip. You can bitch about your Board and I'll bitch about mine! GIVE ME MY BACK-PAY!
