Sault Ste. Marie = HELL ON EARTH!!!

Well, in just over 24 hours, I'm exactly where I started. Now, you may have hear that expression before, but this time it is true. Exactly.

Wednesday came like any other day. Yay, I'm packing to go to Hamilton, Ontario, to visit with family and to attend a cousin's wedding. I'll drive into the city, stay with my sister, and fly out Thursday. I love flying.

Drove out to my sister's. Had a great time. Visited a friendly neighborhood Applebee's with her and her man. Went to bed. Got dropped off at the airport the next day.

I got dropped off super early since my alcoholic uncle's flight got in at 7:30 a.m., and I thought I would keep him company (baby-sit him) until our Hamilton flight.

Peachy keen. He even bought me breakfast.

Then it was flight time. We have a 40 minute stop at Sault Ste. Marie, and then straight on to Hamilton where my step-father is waiting, and I can return to my mother's bosom (figuratively) for gifts, money, and food. Then it happened.

Did you watch the news yesterday.... the story about a blackout (power failure) from New York through all of Eastern Canada?

Um, yeah. 8 hours spent in HELL ON EARTH. No problem, just get some food. Oh wait, the electricity is out. No ATM, and no vending machine. Oh, the small restaurant charged me just over $4.00 for a cheese sandwich and a chocolate milk. I couldn't even pay for it, since I have no cash. No lights in the bathroom. Suddenly, in one of the smallest airports ever, 2 more planes land. Even better....

There was no air conditioning.

Actually, I'm quite impressed with the human race. No riots, all babies slept, all old people kept living, all animals got along (yes, there were dogs and cats on one of the flights). Finally got back through security, sat on the plane for another hour, and flew back to my origin of the flying portion of this adventure.

Waited 2 more hours in lines to get a hotel room and find out that the next available flight that would get me anything remotely near to my family, flies out Sunday. Great news, considering the wedding is Saturday.

So, slept for 4 hours, returned to the airport, found out that they cancelled more flights, bowed my head in defeat, and cancelled my tickets. No refund, but I do get credits towards my next flight with this airline. Who knows, my cousin could divorce and get remarried soon. Drive the 2 hours back to my home, and now I'm sitting in the same computer chair that I sat in on Wednesday.

I don't want to end this on an absolutely crappy note. So...
Good Points:

  • Since I'm unemployed, what would I have done all Thursday anyway?
  • My uncle did not have a single drop of alcohol during this whole experience (though, I feel that he's have soused by now since I left the airport at 10:00 a.m. this morning)
  • Got to see my sister
  • Got to stay in a nice hotel for free
  • Got to ride in a limo since they were out of taxis
  • Got meal voucher coupons that bought me crepes for breakfast this morning, and Tim Horton’s later on
  • Got to meet some extremely nice, caring, and interesting people during the 8 hour visit to HELL ON EARTH.

*grins* Thanks anyway. I slept until until 6 p.m. Now, what to do? Who knows? But I think I will crack open a girlie cooler for supper.

*nods* I know... abbriviation drives me nuts!
Ste. stands for Sainte (pronounced Sou Saint Marie). Italian, I think.
